Ventana VANTAGE Laboratory Workflow Solution
Design Concepts

Overview

T
he premier laboratory workflow solution, Vantage was nevertheless a mediocre user experience at best. Managers wanted the system, but users themselves did not.

Redesigning the interface to make it more approachable allowed me to not only make it more user friendly, but also bring the visual language in line with other Ventana products.

Additionally, by imposing a hierarchy to information and actions, the new interface reduces training time and allows users to be even more efficient, without sacrificing patient safety.

The workflow for pathology laboratories is set and consistent across the globe. Yet the interface for the system that was supposed to support this workflow had no indications of any workflow, no hierarchy of information, and no visual cues as to available actions. The redesign process included analysis of pathology workflows, site visits to both labs with the VANTAGE system installed and those without, observational studies, defining use cases and edge cases with the product manager, defining and refining product requirements, ideation, multiple rounds of design, and then prototype creation before working with development.
Note: implementation was delayed.

Addressing issues happens rarely, so it is not part of the main workflow

Other responsibilities included redesigning the pathology case sharing website and extending the design for mobile devices. Designing small scale usability tests. Collaborating with systems engineers and marketing managers to define product requirements. Providing user interface input and feedback to development teams on periphery projects.
